Nestled in the heart of Las Terrenas, along the lush Samaná Peninsula in the Dominican Republic, Casita Mar offers a rare kind of retreat—where comfort, design, and nature come together in quiet harmony. This open-air villa, cradled by tropical gardens and kissed by sea breeze, invites you to step away from urgency and return to a more natural rhythm of being.

Every element of the villa’s architecture is thoughtfully aligned with the environment. From the stone-tiled floors underfoot to the flow of spaces that open toward the pool and sky, Casita Mar fosters a sense of calm that begins with the senses. The interior, grounded in organic textures and gentle colors, mirrors the softness of the landscape. Light and air move freely through the rooms, creating a living space that breathes alongside you.

Staying here, the healing process unfolds gradually. There is no program to follow—only an environment that encourages deep rest, reflection, and presence. Mornings begin with the sound of palms shifting in the breeze. The scent of salt and hibiscus lingers in the air. Time stretches easily from one moment to the next. Whether practicing yoga at sunrise, resting by the pool in the afternoon, or journaling at dusk, the villa holds space for your internal landscape to settle. The stillness becomes a mirror.

As a curator of healing retreats, I’ve come to recognize the subtle qualities that distinguish restorative spaces. Casita Mar exemplifies them. This is a place that allows your nervous system to soften without effort. The healing emerges not through activity, but through the absence of distraction. Simply being here begins to restore a sense of coherence.

Just a two-minute walk from Casita Mar, a secluded beach unfolds where the waves arrive in gentle hushes and the soft, golden sand invites barefoot wandering. One side is framed by dense tropical greenery; the other, an open coastline that stretches toward the horizon. Continue strolling five minutes along the shore, and the scenery transforms into a vibrant coastal tableau: clusters of brightly painted fishing boats—turquoise, red, yellow, and blue—rest on the sand or float lazily in the shallows. It’s a living canvas of Caribbean life, where local families gather to celebrate birthdays under palm-fringed shade, and cheerful beach cafés and bars dot the shoreline, offering cold drinks, fresh coffee, and warm conversation just steps from the sea.

This is where local life pulses gently through the scenery. Families gather under palm trees to celebrate birthdays and share laughter over picnic tables. Friendly beachside cafés and bars with wooden decks serve fresh coffee, cold drinks, and warm smiles. Everything here feels real, grounded, and welcoming—like a reminder that joy doesn’t have to be complicated.

Eco-Adventures Curated by Casita Mar

Beyond the villa’s quiet cocoon, Las Terrenas offers a vibrant counterbalance—a laid-back town on the northern coast of the Samaná Peninsula, framed by swaying coconut palms and long stretches of golden sand. Once a humble fishing village, Las Terrenas has grown into a colorful hub of European-Caribbean charm. Along its breezy streets, French cafés, Dominican eateries, artisan boutiques, and fruit vendors create a rich tapestry of local life. The rhythm here is mellow yet alive—welcoming slow strolls, spontaneous conversations, and sunset seafood meals that stretch into the night.

One of the most unforgettable experiences during our stay was the short 18-minute drive from Casita Mar to the meeting point of the Coso River and the sea—a location that feels entirely untouched. Guided by the ever-curious and warm-hearted Frahain, we followed a secluded trail through forests of towering palms and tangled mangrove groves, their roots gripping the water like living sculptures. The river winds calmly toward the sea, shaded by a lush green canopy that breathes serenity into every step. As it meets the turquoise ocean, the two waters dance together in a quiet, powerful confluence that invites total presence.

Another adventure, particularly dear to our family, was the horseback ride to Salto El Limón waterfall. A short drive brought us to the rural town of El Limón, where we mounted local horses for the trek through dense Caribbean forests and gentle hills. For our two boys, it was their very first horseback experience—one they'll carry with them forever. The trail itself, lined with wild cacao and coffee trees, was alive with earthy scents and the sounds of tropical birds. With every step, we moved closer to nature’s pulse.

The reward at the end of the journey was breathtaking: a 165-foot waterfall in full flow, cascading into a jade-green pool surrounded by jungle walls. It was May—the beginning of the rainy season—and the waterfall roared in full glory. The boys couldn’t wait to jump in, their laughter echoing beneath the falls. The energy was both invigorating and deeply grounding.

Each of these experiences—whether soaking in the confluence of river and sea, riding horseback through rainforest trails, or simply walking down the beach—are not just excursions, but meaningful invitations to connect more deeply with nature, family, and self. Casita Mar, with its serene comfort and local partnerships, offers more than a home; it becomes a sanctuary for discovery and renewal.

A Retreat That Restores

Casita Mar comfortably accommodates up to six guests across three private en-suite bedrooms. The layout supports shared experiences as well as solitude—ideal for couples, families, or small groups seeking intentional time together. Artists, wellness practitioners, and travelers with a quiet purpose will find the villa especially resonant.

As we left Casita Mar, we did so not with the feeling of checking out, but with the sense of carrying something forward—an inner quiet, a renewed pace, a memory of connection. This space doesn’t impose transformation; it holds the conditions for it gently, allowing each guest to reconnect on their own terms. The healing here is soft, organic, and lasting.

This is a place to return to yourself, in every sense of the word.
